Prince William County Animal Shelter

Due to the increase in bear sightings reported in Prince William County, we would like to provide the following safety tips.

It is important to note bears in this area are omnivorous and typically do not pose a threat to people. During this time of year, many of the bears forage up to 20 hours per day for berries, plants and deceased small mammals.

They do not hunt animals or people. Once a "human placed" food source is removed, the bear will usually return to its normal diet in the woods. Females may become aggressive when protecting a cub. We ask that citizens avoid approaching bears at all costs.

It is important to prevent bears from becoming accustomed to people. Homeowners and businesses should remove food sources from around their property. Common attractions include bird feeders, pet food, grills and trash containers.

The State does not allow the trapping/tranquilization and relocation of wildlife. We ask that any resident who sees a bear contact Animal Control via email ([email protected]) with any reported sightings. Or contact the State Game Warden (855) 571-9003.

Further information can be found at http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/bear.

VA releases new COVID Coach mobile app WASHINGTON – May 12, 2020 — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced the launch of the COVID Coach app, a new mobile app designed to help both Veterans and civilians cope with feelings of stress and anxiety they may be experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The app includes practical tools, information and resources that can all be used from the safety of one’s home to track well-being, mood swings and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. A personal goal setting tracker can help users work toward achieving small victories. The mindfulness and sleep tools can be helpful for improving mental health and well-being. The indoor activities tool and staying healthy recommendations have been specifically tailored to the current COVID-19 situation. “VA wants to make sure Veterans have access to every resource available,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “The COVID Coach app provides tools and information to stay mentally and physically healthy.” Direct links to resources are available within the app for those who may need additional professional support. The COVID Coach can be used independently or while engaged in mental health treatment but is not intended to replace needed professional care. COVID Coach was developed by VA’s National Center for PTSD’s Mobile Mental Health Team, in conjunction with the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. https://www.ptsd.va.gov/appvid/mobile/COVID_coach_app.asp https://mobile.va.gov/app/covid-coach

This is a forwarded message from a lady in my neighborhood, please sign up to volunteer and share this mesage if you can: Sharing for a friend: Volunteers needed for Marine Corps Marathon next Sunday, October 27th. Please consider. Forward: Y’all I need your help. I’m stressing out. We always have an attrition rate on race day. But with the potential rain forecast I know it will be worse than normal. We are currently sitting at 1/2 the amount of volunteers we need for the MCM blue Mile. That currently leaves 200 flags with fallen service members names sitting on a fence and not being held. If it rains it will probably be 300 unless we get more volunteers. So if you are not running the Marine Corps Marathon and don’t mind a little water we would love to have you help us create the blue Mile. The blue Mile is a one mile stretch along Hains Point that honors our nations fallen service members. The MCM blue Mile is the biggest one put on at any race around the country. The first half of the mile will have 400 Faces of the Fallen posters on each side of the course. The second half of the course is hundreds of volunteers lining both sides of the course, holding full size American flags. Each flag has a black ribbon bearing the name of one of the fallen service members featured on the posters. Every poster has been requested by those running the race or volunteering on the blue Mile. They say people die twice. The first time when their life comes to an end, the second is the last time their name is spoken. By remembering the sacrifice of these brave men and women, they live on in each of us. These photos are from when I ran through the blue Mile last year in honor of two friends. I cannot tell you how much it means to the family and friends to have the volunteers holding the flags. When I volunteer on the blue Mile, I bring my family with me. We’ve had parents wearing their brand new babies while holding a flag. We have little kids in strollers and older kids in scout uniform earning volunteer hours. You can always bring your family. I personally bring a wagon and load it up like I would if I was taking the kids the beach for a few hours. I bring camping chairs in case they need a break. I bring jackets, umbrellas, and snacks too. If you do not have a wear blue shirt one will be given to you that morning. Right now the forecast looks like rain, we know that this will keep volunteers away. Please come anyway. The marathon will happen rain or shine and we need your help to honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen for the 1,064 steps that make up this tribute to them and their families. Register to volunteer here: www.wearblueruntoremember.org/marine-corps-marathon This is a forwarded message from a lady in my neighborhood, please sign up to volunteer and share this message if you can:
FREE WILLS FOR Veterans/Spouses and/or caregivers of a veteran FREE, pro-bono Legal service offering veterans, spouses and/or their caregivers 3 legal documents: a Will, Powers of Attorney and a Health Care Directive. This is the 3rd Legal Clinic (held every 2 years since 2015) that the Area Agency on Aging, in partnership with the PWC Bar Association has conducted. We are once again offering this FREE service to our veterans who lives in PWC and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park…..and I am asking for your help in getting the word out about the 2019 Wills for Vets Program (please see attached flyer). When the program began in 2015, we were able to use the Manassas American Legion Post 7589 for our 3 different meetings. In 2017, I alternated the location to the eastern side of the county at the Woodbridge Senior Center. For the 2019 program we are once again coming back to the western side of the county—meeting at the Manassas Senior Center, 9320 Mosby Street. Those of you who belong to/participate at any of the VFW’s, American Legion’s, NOVAVets ---or other veteran organizations/groups…please talk to your reps/post commanders, etc…and let them know I am available to make a brief presentation to the members and answer any questions about the Wills for Vets Program or drop off multiple copies of the flyers. Please feel free to share/forward this email (w/ attachment) to any eligible veteran that you feel could benefit…or they can just call/email me w/ any questions as well as sign-up. As staff of the Lead Agency (Prince William Area Agency on Aging, in partnership w/ the PWC Bar Assoc), I am responsible for responding to all inquiries as the coordinator/scheduler as well as the liaison w/ the lead attorney. In the past, the attorneys were able to serve 80 individuals in 2015 and 2017. For the 2019 program, the PWC Bar Association pro-bono attorneys would like to expand this program to serve 100…..those who participated in the past and completed evaluation surveys rated this program as EXCELLENT and VERY SATISFIED. Thank you in advance for your assist and support….and should any of you have any questions/need additional info please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.
